Clarence Hines is a trombonist, composer, arranger, and educator whose warm tone, lyrical style, and expressive ensemble writing shape his distinctive musical voice. He approaches performance, writing, and teaching with a collaborative spirit and a commitment to meaningful musical connection.
As a performer, Hines has worked with a wide range of respected artists and ensembles including Slide Hampton, Bob Brookmeyer, David Sanborn, John Pizzarelli, Maceo Parker, Diane Schuur, Bobby Caldwell, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Jacksonville Symphony. His performances have taken him to major festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Rochester International Jazz Festival, and the Jacksonville Jazz Festival. Based in Jacksonville, Florida, he was a longtime member of the St. John’s River City Band, the official band of the State of Florida, and he currently performs with the Jacksonville Jazz Collective.
As a composer and arranger, Hines has written works for professional and collegiate ensembles throughout the United States and Canada. His music has been featured at the Tanglewood Music Festival, the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference, the Strings Music Festival, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, among other national and international venues. His current project, Confluence, is an album that features the Clarence Hines Jazz Orchestra and showcases eight works that reflect his distinctive style.
Hines currently serves as Director of the School of Music and Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of North Florida, where he focuses on supporting student success, strengthening community partnerships, and fostering creative opportunities for young musicians. He is a Conn-Selmer Artist and performs on Conn and King trombones.
