Dr. Neal Postma has enjoyed a multi-faceted career working in nearly every part of the music industry. He currently serves as the South Central Higher Education Solutions District Manager for Yamaha Corporation of America, where he works exclusively with institutions of higher learning.
Prior to joining Yamaha, Neal taught in higher education in South Carolina where he served on the faculties of Winthrop University, Claflin University, Clemson University, and South Carolina State University. His students are enjoying successful careers inside and outside the music industry.
As a performer, Neal has appeared as a guest recitalist across the US and in Asia and Europe. His programs are eclectic and feature new music, standard repertoire, transcriptions, and underperformed works. He was a founder of the Palmetto Saxophone Quartet and performed regularly with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra Augusta, the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, and the Long Bay Symphony Orchestra.
In 2018, Neal cofounded the American Single Reed Summit and served as the organization’s president until 2022. ASRS is the first national conference for saxophonists and clarinetists with an emphasis on pedagogy, career diversification, cultivating the next generation of single reed musicians, and advocating for diversity in the field. He is also a former board member and project manager for the National Saxophone Museum in St. Louis, MO.
From 2012-2015, Neal taught MYP Music at the Guangdong Country Garden School (an IB accredited institution) in Foshan City, China. He revamped an existing music program with a new curriculum that included world music. While in China, Neal worked with various companies in the music industry and was invited to adjudicate competitions in Thailand and Indonesia.
Neal holds performance degrees from the University of South Carolina (DMA), the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (MM), and the University of Colorado (BM). His primary teachers are Dr. Clifford Leaman, Dr. James Bunte, and Professor Tom Myer.
Outside of his career, Neal enjoys spending time with his wife, Becky Morris, and son, Johannes. His hobbies include hiking, traveling, and cooking.
