John Britton is a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology at Indiana State University, where he researches predictors of music performance anxiety (MPA) in student musicians. His dissertation examines behavioral inhibition as a risk factor for MPA and explores whether distinct subtypes of the condition emerge across different contexts. His graduate research has been recognized with the university’s 2024 Bakerman Graduate Research Award for his paper A Review of Music Performance Anxiety in Musicians.
John’s musical career includes extensive experience as a performer, educator, and recording artist. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the Eastman School of Music, performing with the Eastman Jazz Ensemble and working with artists such as Peter Erskine, Lew Soloff, and Chuck Mangione. He co-founded the Britton Brothers Band, recorded the album Uncertain Living featuring guest saxophonist Chris Potter, and toured nationally at notable jazz venues. Beyond performance, he has taught private lessons, led improvisation and trumpet workshops, and served twice as a Jazz Mentor Fellow at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, supporting youth jazz education through instruction and mentorship.
With a Master of Music in Music Therapy from the University of Miami and a Master of Science in Psychology from Indiana State, John integrates clinical science with a strong creative background. He is a Board-Certified Music Therapist with clinical experience in inpatient psychiatry, outpatient groups, and pediatric care. He currently provides psychotherapy across the lifespan, treating emotional, behavioral, and health-related concerns.
John’s clinical and educational approach emphasizes reducing barriers to self-expression, supporting emotional regulation, and empowering performers within compassionate, evidence-based care. Through the JEN clinic, he aims to help jazz educators and students build confident, emotionally healthy performance environments where creativity and well-being can thrive.
