Malaysian-born pianist and educator Alton Wong is a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate in Piano Performance at West Virginia University, where he also earned double Master’s degrees in Classical Piano and Jazz Pedagogy. He serves as a graduate teaching assistant, and holds responsibilities teaching jazz piano, jazz history, contemporary keyboard skills, and coaching jazz combos. As a solo performer, he received the 2023 DownBeat Magazine Student Music Award for Best Soloist and was named a semifinalist in the Rubato International Piano Competition the same year– recognition shaped his studies with jazz luminaries Aaron Goldberg and Fred Hersch. He has recorded two albums as a leader: Taking Form (2025) featuring compositions he wrote for jazz pianists who greatly influenced his musical voice and Time and Tune (2021) showcasing originals and arrangements of Sabahan folk tunes that represent his childhood growing up in the northern Malaysian state on Borneo.
