Born and raised in Syracuse, NY, Ian Stewart has built a distinguished career as a bassist and educator. He earned his BM in Jazz Studies from SUNY Purchase in 2008, his master’s degree from New Jersey City University in 2024, and is currently a doctoral candidate and TA at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. In 2009, he moved to Chicago, where he became an active performer, working with Darwin Noguera, the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, and Paul Wertico, while also touring extensively with Marbin, opening for jazz legends such as Allan Holdsworth and Scott Henderson. A chance encounter with bassist John Benitez led him to return to New York City in 2014, where he has since performed with a diverse range of world music, jazz, and fusion artists, including People of Earth, Gerardo Contino, Bobby Sanabria, the Big Apple Circus, Los Hacheros, Itai Kriss, Beledo, Tony Allen, Marcos Costa, and Peliroja, among others. In 2015, he co-authored The John Benítez Bass Method Volume 1: Freedom in the Clave, followed by The John Benítez Bass Method, Vol. 2: El Sonero del Barrio in 2018. In addition to performing, he has contributed as a columnist for Timba.com, served as faculty at Scott’s Bass Lessons, and is currently on faculty at Florida Atlantic University.
